How to separate laundry
Step 1

Sorting clothes for washing success
It may be easy to throw a bunch of mixed laundry into the machine, but if you don't want everything to turn a weird shade of pink or gray, it's best to learn how to separate your laundry. If you only have a small amount from one group, don't be tempted to put it in another. Save it for the full machine.
Sort clothes by color
Deep colored clothes are more likely to bleed when washed. In order not to damage other clothes, sort your laundry by color, grouping dark, medium and light colors separately. Wash deep colored clothes such as indigo jeans or red sweatshirts separately during the first few washes.
Sort clothes by fabric type
Wash heavier items of clothing, such as towels, separately from lighter clothing to prevent wear and damage to finer fabrics. For the same reason, separate clothes with zippers and buttons from knitted clothes and underwear. If lint is left on an item, wash it separately from microfiber, corduroy, or other fabrics that attract it hairs.
Another reason for separating laundry by fabric type is that heavier items take longer to dry than lighter items. By drying together, lighter items dry too much, stressing the fibers, and heavier items often remain damp.

Sort by the amount of dirt on the objects
Very dirty or soiled laundry should be washed separately in a longer cycle with strong centrifuge. This provides the agitation necessary to rid the clothes of heavy soiling.
Turn the clothes inside out
This will protect it during washing. It also prevents jeans from turning white at the seams.
Pre-treat your clothes
Before washing, pre-treat heavy stains to increase the strength of the detergent.
Choosing the right laundry basket
Use a divided basket for laundry - it will save time for sorting later.
In case someone in the household puts something in the wrong compartment, check the clothing labels for the manufacturer's washing recommendations.
If in doubt, test the color fastness by applying warm water to an inconspicuous area (for example, the inside of the hem), then press with a warm iron between two pieces of fabric. If any color bleeds, it is not permanent!
